Install a modpack

Tree Host can install Fabric, Forge and NeoForge modpacks from Modrinth and CurseForge. It reads the pack, sets up the right Minecraft version and loader, and downloads the mods for you.

Note: on the staging site, creating servers is turned off until launch. You can explore the shared demo, but it does not run a real modpack.

1. Find your pack#

  1. In the dashboard, choose + New server → Install a modpack instead.
  2. Choose Modrinth or CurseForge at the top.
  3. Search for the pack. On CurseForge you can also paste its Project ID, which you'll find on the pack's CurseForge page, under About Project.
  4. Choose the pack, its version and your plan, agree to the Minecraft EULA and install it.

Check the pack's memory requirements before you choose a plan. Big packs often need 6 to 8 GB, and many won't start on 2 GB.

2. Wait for it to install#

The mods download in the background while the loader installs, and the Console shows both. A big pack can take several minutes. When the console says the modpack is installed and the loader has finished, press Start.

The first start of a modded server is slow. A few minutes is normal for a big pack.

3. Upload any blocked mods#

Some mod authors don't allow other sites to download their mods. If a CurseForge pack includes one, Tree Host can't fetch it for you, and your Mods tab shows a box listing each one by name.

  1. Open the link for each mod in that box.
  2. On CurseForge, download the file named in the box.
  3. Drag it onto the Mods tab's upload area.
  4. When they're all uploaded, start the server.

The pack may not start until these are in place. Packs with an official server pack usually don't need this step.

A few packs can't be installed at all, because their author blocks downloads of the whole pack. Tree Host tells you when that happens.

4. Join#

Every player needs the same pack and version. Install it with a launcher such as the CurseForge app or Modrinth App, then join with the Join address at the top of your Tree Host server page.

Fix common problems#

  • The server crashes while starting and mentions a "client" class or "invalid dist": the pack includes a mod that only works on players' computers. The crash report names it. Disable it in the Mods tab, then start again.
  • A blocked mod is missing: upload it as in step 3. Use the exact file named in the box, because another version may not work.
  • Ran out of memory: the pack needs more than your plan has. Choose a bigger plan.
  • Friends can't join: compare the pack version on their launcher with your server's. They have to match.
